Bayang Karerista Horse Racing Glossary

Aparato – Starting gate/stall or Pruett gate
Aficionado – A racing fan/habitue
Apprentice – An inexperienced rider granted weight allowance.
Apprentice Allowance – Weight reduction permitted on horses ridden by apprentices in races other than stakes and handicaps.
Ayuda – Full exertion, usually under whipping.
Backstretch – Straight part of track opposite homestretch; stable area.
Bandera – Lead or front in a race.
Banderista – A front runner or a horse with early speed; a horse that prefers to run in front rather than come from behind.
Banig – To bet on every possible daily double, forecast (exacta), quinella, trifecta or other multiple wagering proportion. Also called buying the rack.
Barrier – A trial race.
Benta – Total gross sales of a particular wagering event.
Bentanilla – The betting window.
Bisiro – A yearling (year-old) horse.
Bitaw – Refers to the moment when a jockey lets loose of his mount.
Blanket Finish – A close finish. See also Photo Finish.
Break in – Teaching a young horse to accept saddle, bridle, and rider.
Breakage – Money subtracted from proper mutuel payoffs to leave rounded mounts paid to holders of winning tickets.
Bulusok – To rally or let loose.
Bumalya – Where a horse races towards the rail despite rider’s efforts to maintain straight course.
Bumuka – To run wide; when a horse races diagonally away from the rail instead of a straight path.
Clubhouse Turn or Bend – Turn of the track nearest the clubhouse; usually refers to the first bend that begins on the home stretch.
Colt – An unaltered (not castrated) male horse aged four or less.
Copia – The weekly condition sheet reflecting probable race groupings of horses.
Coupled – Two or more horses running as single betting interest (“entry”) in the same race.
Daily Double a type of bet – Select a horse to win in each of the two consecutive races (1st leg and 2nd leg) nominated by the Club.
Daily Double +1 a type of bet – Select three horses to finish first in each of the three consecutive races (which will be the 1st leg, 2nd leg and 3rd leg) designated by the Club as the Daily Double +1.
Deboka – A sprinter, pacer, or front-runner.
Dejado – An underrated racehorse that wins or has a good chance of winning.
Dehagok – A gunter; a horse that breathes noisily during exercise.
Deklarado – A horse entered in a particular race/event.
Deremate – A come-from-behind runner and one that is able to race well at longer distances; a stayer or a dependable runner.
Di-nagkain – A horse that eats poorly, indicating illness, discomfort, or exhaustion.
Di-natimbang – A loser that fails to earn part of the purse.
Di-sunod – A horse that prefers to follow the front-runner in the early going. See also Deremate.
Diskuwalipika – To disqualify or to officially lower a horse’s finishing position because it interfered with others during the race, carried improper weight, or was drugged.
Divisa – The racing silks or colors usually identified with a particular owner or stable.
Dividendazo – The most popular local racing form which gives a profile of the horses in each race and their jockeys. See also Deklarado, Istrikto, Kalahok, Programa.
Engkargado – A race horse trainer or one knowledgeable in handling horses.
Ensayador – An exercise rider or a rider during workouts.
Ensayo – A workout, airing, or a morning gallop intended mainly for conditioning.
Exotic Bets – Any wagering event involving multiple bets or any bet requiring that three horses be combined, as in Trifecta.
Extra Double a type of bet – Select a horse to win in each of the two races (not consecutive) (1st leg and 3nd leg) nominated by the Club for both races from the starters in the Extra Double event appearing in the racing program.
False Start – When a horse leaves a starting gate prematurely.
Filly – A female horse aged four or less.
Foal – A newborn horse.
Forecast a type of bet – Select two horses to finish first and second in correct order in a race.
Ganador – A stud or a stallion; a male horse.
Ganar – To run or win in a convincing fashion.
Gate – Tracks’ daily receipts from admission tickets.
Gising – Wide awake or alert, indicative of good condition.
Grosa see Benta
Grumadweyt – To graduate or to win a maiden race.
Hand Ride – When a rider encourages speed by rolling his hands rhythmically on a horse neck.
Hagok – A noisy equine breathing similar to coughing. See also Dehagok.
Hinete – A jockey.
Huling Kurbada – The final stretch turn.
Huling Rekta – The homestretch or the last straight towards the finish straight part of track from final turn to finish.
Hugando – A decisive victory without much urging or undue effort. To handle easily. See also Ganar.
Husto ang Makina – A well-bred or pedigreed horse.
Husto sa Timbang – Carrying the exact handicap weight. See also Timbang, Weight-for-Age.
Impate – A dead heat; when two horses reach finish line simultaneously. See also Photo Finish.
Inahin – A broodmare or a female horse used for breeding; the horse for breeding; the horses dam or mother.
Inquiry – A steward’s post-race investigation of possible infractions.
Istrikto – The roster of horses proposed by the owners a week before a race.
Istalyon see Ganador
Itinago – To manipulate a horse so that its record conceals its true ability.
Juvenile – A two year-old horse.
Kalahok – Entry or numbers of starters in fields; the horses competing in a race. See also Deklarado, Dividendazo, Istrikto, Programa.
Kapatid sa Ina – Half-brother or half-sister.
Kapon – A gelding; a castrated horse.
Karerista – A regular racegoer or railbird; one who stands at track’s outside rail for close observation.
Kinapos – A horse without sufficient racing energy or that tires quickly. See also Di-nagkain, Di-natimbang.
Kontra Salida – A horse that runs against stride.

Kulang sa Timbang – Not carrying the exact handicap weight. See also Husto sa Timbang, Timbang, Weight-for-Age.
Kulelat – To finish last in the field.
Kumbinasyon – Across-the-board wager combination bet on a particular wagering event. See also Exotic Bets.
Kundisyon ng Pista – Condition of the track.
Kurbada – The bend or curve; a turn of the track.
Kuwartos – Fractions or clocking at quartermile intervals in races and workouts.
Labas – A horse that is out to win; exerts maximum effort to win a particular race. See also Banderista, Deboka, Dejado, Deremate.
Latigo – The whip.
Length – The measurement of distance, usually eight or nine feet; distance between horses in a race.
Liyamado – The favorite or the chalk horse; odds on betting favorite; odds of less than even money.
Lundag – To leap upward at start of the race instead of racing forward.
Mabilis na Pista – A fast track; dry surface on which horses usually run fast; a track when running times are really fast. See also Kundisyon ng Pista.
Magbabakal – A farrier or someone who shoes a horse.
Magic Nine a type of bet – Select 9 horses (one horse for each race nominated by The Club) to finish first in each of the nine consecutive races designated as Magic 9 event.
Magulang – A horse aged seven or older.
Malalim na Pista – A dead track; a track with less than normal resilience. See also Kundisyon ng Pista.
Match Race – A race between two horses.
Medya Milya – The half-mile mark or pole.
Meta – The finish or payoff line.
Milya – A mile distance.
Mola – A thoroughbred.
Na-bato – To step on a hard object (i.e. stones) on the track.
Na-kotyo see Naungusan
Nadidal – To place a bet/wager on the wrong horse.
Nag-ultimo Quatro – The rally going into the last 400 meters. See also Deremate.
Nakasilat – To upset a favorite.
Nakasilip ng Daanan – Saw an opening.
Nakatalikod sa Labangan – A bed doer or a horse that eats poorly, indicating illness, discomfort, exhaustion. See also Di-nagkain.
Nakatirintas – A bangtail; mane or tail folded and bound when track is muddy.
Naiwan – To be left behind or dwell in the gates; said of a horse that leaves starting gate late.
Naligaw see Nadidal
Nalubak – To step on a soft spot or hit a hard object on track. See also Na-bato.
Nalutsa – To encounter stiff opposition or a speed duel at the front.
Nanara – To interfere or impede the path of another entry/horse during a race.

Nanikit see Naiwan
Nanlamig – A horse which suddenly runs in cold in the course of the race.
Nanopresa – To score a surprise win or an upset. See also Dejado.
Napilay – To breakdown; become unable to run because of injury to the horse’s legs.
Natalisod – To bobble or to stumble.
Natimbang – To finish in the money.

Naungusan – To outnip or to beat another entry to the wire.
Novato – A newcomer horse or a horse that has yet to win on official race.
Octavo – One-eighths of a mile or roughly 200 meters.
Outrider – Mounted track or employee who escorts horses and their lead ponies to the starting gate, or pursues horses that bolt away.

Pamoste – A sure winner.
Panahog – An also-ran, horse that finishes out of the money with no real intent of winning race. See also Di-natimbang.
Pandehado – A long shot bet or pick.
Pandiin – A shoo-in; decided favorite or a sure winner
Pang-gulo see Panahog
Pang-ibabaw – The preferred entry/horse in a case of coupled entry or those belonging to the same stable.
Paniningil see Pandiin
Panlutsa – A pacesetter; a horse fielded to rival the pacesetters in the early going with the intent of wearing them down.
Patas – A dead heat; horses of equal caliber.
Pay Ring see Totalisador
Pentafecta a type of bet – Select five horses to finish first, second, third, fourth and fifth in the correct order in a race nominated by the Club.
Peso see Timbang
Pick Five a type of bet – Select five horses (one horse for each race nominated by the Club) to finish first in each of the five consecutive races designated as Pick 5 event.
Pick Four a type of bet – Select four horses (one horse for each race nominated by the Club) to finish first in each of the four consecutive races designated as Pick 4 event.
Pick Six a type of bet – Select six horses (one horse for each race nominated by the Club) to finish first in each of the six consecutive races designated as Pick 6 event.
Pigil – To ease or back-up; to slow down relative to other jockeys in a race or to spare horse dangerous exertion by slowing it down.

Pista – The race track or the track area.
Photo Finish – A race too close to call, the winner is declared by looking at photograph.

Place a type of bet – Select a horse to finish either first, second or third where the total number of runners is eight or more. Where the total number of runners is five, six or seven, select a horse to finish either first or second.
Programa – The race program or card. See also Dividendazo, Istrikto, Kalahok.
Protesta – A protest/objection; a complaint filed by a jockey or trainer to stewards about alleged infractions committed by another entry/horse.
Quartet a type of bet – Select four horses to finish first, second, third and fourth in the correct order.
Quatro – Fractions of every mile or every 400 meters of the race.
Rekta – The stretch; the final stretch.
Remate – To close fast or finish fast.
Rumble – To box one’s bet/wager; a combination of bets involving three or more horses. See also Exotic Bets.
Rumekta – To close in; gain ground on the leader in the final stages of the race.
Salida – The break or the start of the race.
Saludo – Customary salute of the jockey to the stewards by raising the whip after the race, seeking permission to dismount.
Scratch – A declared horse withdrawn in a particular race.
Sex Allowance – Weight concession to female in race against males.

Siete-octavo – Seven-eighths of a mile, or 1,000 meters.
Sota – Stablehand who walks the horses while they cool down.
Sota-mayor – The chief stablehand.
Stud – A stallion or breeding farm.
Stud Book – Official Thoroughbred registry; a stallion’s mating schedule.
Stud Fee – Payment by breeder to owner of stallion for its services.
Subaybayan – A horse to watch for in future races. See also Dejado.
Sukat – The height of the horse; distance from ground to top of withers, usually measured in hands.
Super Six a type of bet – Select six horses to finish first, second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth in the correct order in a race nominated by the Club.
Suspendido – A suspended or grounded jockey/horse due to an infraction of the rule book.
Sweepstakes – A stakes race; the richest maiden races.
Tabing Balya – The infield or the area within the inner perimeter of the track.

Taob ang Labangan – A good horse or an enthusiastic eater. See also Nakatalikod sa Labangan, Di-nagkain.
Taya – A bet or a wager.
Tayaan – To bet on a particular horse/entry.
Timbang – The impost or the handicap weight assigned; weight carried by a horse in a race. See also Husto sa Timbang, Sex Allowance, Weight-for-Age.
Timbangan – Finish in the money or the top three placing.
Tiyempista – Clockers; time keepers; handicapper
Totalisador – The totalizator or odds board; automatic pari-mutuel machinery that records bets as they are made and calculates odds.
Tres-octavo – Three-eighths of a mile or 600 meter.
Tres-quatro – Three-fourths of a mile or 1,200 meters.
Trial – A preparatory race; a workout in which horse is asked for top speed.
Trifecta a type of bet – Select three horses to finish first, second and third in the correct order in a race.
Triple Crown – Mythical award to three-year-old horses that win the richest and most coveted race series of the year, which usually runs from May to July.
Tumimbang – To weigh-in or two weigh-out.
Umalagwa – To take a commanding lead.
Unang Lundag – To break away at the start of the race.
Vivo – To ask speed.

Walang Madaanan – A situation where the jockey is in the middle of the pack and can’t see.
Weight-for-Age – When horses carry weights prescribed by the scale of weights according to age. See also Husto sa Timbang, Sex Allowance.

Winner Take All a type of bet – Select seven horses (one horse for each race nominated by The Club) to finish first in each of the seven consecutive races designated as WTA event.
